In My Personal Life: From Copper to Gold...
I grew up in Encampment, Wyoming where the wind blows all the time and it only takes ten minutes to walk from one side of town to the other. At an elevation of over 7400 feet, the town got its name from the Grand Encampments that the fur-traders and the Native Americans would have every year in the Platte River Valley. In the late 1800s, Copper was mined from the mountains of the Sierra Madres. From the Rudefeha mine on the Continental Divide to Encampment's adjoining town Riverside, the largest aerial tramway in the world at that time, was constructed to haul copper ore to the smelter. Once the mines went bust, agriculture -- mostly cattle ranching and logging, became the two industries to support the little ghost town. I moved to Lead, SD after graduating from college -- a town that was home to Homestake Gold Mine, one of the largest gold mines in the western hemisphere. It operated as an underground mine that included open pit mining. Lead was founded shortly after the gold rush to the Black Hills in 1876. Staying in operation for over 100 years, Homestake finally closed its doors in 2003 and re-opened with a new purpose in 2007: as a Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory. Every summer physicists from all over the world come to Lead to study neutrinos, physics, and science in the Sanford Underground Research Facility. I met and married Joshua in Deadwood. It is there that we have made our home and raise our twin daughters: Abigail and Allison.
